What is a Shoe Last?

In shoemaking, the last is a positive image of the foot, made of wood or plastic. It is usually equipped with a notch and hinge for easy removal from a shoe. In production, the shoe components, including the uppers and the outer soles are stitched or glued directly onto the last. For a run of sizes, each individual size length and width usually has its own last.

The design of a shoe last is a highly skilled component of shoe making. A successful shoe has a last that integrates anatomical information of the foot, the specific purpose of the footwear, and the desired attractiveness and style of the shoe.

What does this mean for you, the shoe customer? As you come to understand your own feet, you will find that certain shoes fit better than others. Can you pinpoint the exact features that are making the difference? Perhaps you enjoy a wide toe box. Perhaps a snug heel holds your feet from slipping out. Try to develop a memory of how you like your shoes to feel. And if you enjoy the fit of a certain shoe, it may be worthwhile to find out if other shoes are made in the same last.
